After a certain point in time, we all have to wake up, switch off the alarm and get to work. It becomes a mandatory part of our lives. Work provides us with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. When we are connected to an organization or a workplace, we have a source of belongingness and affiliation with a group of people. Going past pay checks, people go to work because it provides them with personal development and allows them to hone their skillsets. .’;
When Johnny wakes up in the morning and gets ready for work, he has a sense of direction as to what he has to accomplish over the course of the day. When he gets a task done successfully, he feels happy and optimistic. When he receives a promotion, he’s ecstatic about his goals coming to fruition. He wakes up with determination and goes to sleep with satisfaction.
Rahul, in another timezone, wakes up at 2pm after sleeping in because he was out and about till earning morning. He doesn’t have a job or a business to handle hence no apparent schedule appears in his daily journal. He keeps himself busy with friends and family but lacks purpose and direction to his days.
Who do you think is more fulfilled when looking back at their year? I’ll put my odds on Johnny. Viktor E. Frankl once said that “he who a why to live can bear almost any how.” Not any work but quality work can add abundance and prosperity to our lives. People that benefit others through their work lead richer and happier lives than those who are just working for profit maximization and recognition.

Youngsters often chase glorified jobs at famous multinational companies without finding out whether the company aligns with their value systems. A workplace can provide income, purpose and belongingness but it can to do so much more if it values its people. A company that is working for the collective good of society goes a long way in comparison to those only catering to their balance sheets and profit & loss statements.
